Issue: Poverty in Kibera, a slum located in Nairobi, Kenya
Topic: Poverty
Period: Humanities 2
1. Close the Door on Poverty (CDP)
2. Due to poverty being a very broad subject matter, our group narrowed it down to focus only on child poverty in Nairobi, Kenya, specifically in Kibera, which is Africa's largest (sometimes credited as second largest) slum.
3. The purpose of our action is to help do our part in ending world poverty while encouraging others to do the same as well. Being students here at SAS we have learned that if we start out doing something small we can begin to make a greater effect on our world, so we all agreed on child poverty in Kibera located in Nairobi, Kenya to be our focused topic. Every three seconds innocent people die from the effects of poverty. This sad and terrible situation makes kids just like us really begin to think about the all things we take for granted, such as clean water, education, a meal set down on our table everyday, and even just a clean suitable area to shelter us. These simple things are what people like the children in Kibera hope to receive to be able to live and survive another day. This project has made us think about world wide issues and how real these issues really are. People suffer everyday while we sit in school and at home in great comfort. Now that we have been given this opportunity to make a difference we hope to do the best we can and make every little action count. We may not completely stop world poverty but we will make a change in somebody's lives. With so many people capable of doing just what we plan to do we hope to begin to educate others and raise more awareness and even inspire other people to get up and take action before its too late.
4. Day after day, millions of people are suffering from the effects of poverty. Each day, from hunger or hunger-related causes alone, about 25,000 people die (http://www.poverty.com/). Although there are many people capable of contributing their part into this issue, many are still uninformed making them incapable of taking action. Poverty has left many people in horrible living conditions making them unable to afford basic needs such as food, clean water, proper shelter, medication, clothing, etc. Not only does this issue effect children in Kibera, millions of people throughout the world are facing similar tragic conditions. This is important because these children represent the future of our planet and will be needed to help solve the issues that our world is currently facing and will be facing in the future. These children should be able to have opportunities to succeed through education, well-being, and useful resources. How these children are brought up will affect our society and future generations to come, and therefore, it will in turn affect us. Due to this issue affecting the greater population, people should start now into caring about what is happening in order to have the prospect of changing the future to open new doors to a brighter tomorrow for everyone.
5. In order to ensure that the organization is able to be maintained, we have set both short term and long term goals to guarantee change can be enacted quickly while having a larger, long term goal to accomplish. This organization is centered around the goal of reducing child poverty within Kibera while raising awareness to the general population. The actions we will take to establish this goal involves distinct smaller, minor goals to confirm the accomplishment of our principal goal. A difference can be made through small actions that affects the whole community.
6. Short Term Goals: -Give 45 minute presentations to students, parents, and teachers here at SAS during the Global Issues Conference on Feb 23rd. -Raise money by selling t-shirts (this will also help raise awareness) -Educate others from our Wikis -Make a YouTube Video to help raise awareness
7. Long Term Goals:
-Continue to help raise awareness as we grow older -Continue to donate money to different organizations in the future
8. Resources Needed:
- We must be able to contact a t-shirt shop if we're doing this as a fundraiser and to raise the awareness in our community
- Must find a t-shirt place - Must have equipment and time to make a YouTube video
